The market in San Miguel de Madrid – A place of worship

It’s funny over time. Who would tell the locals that where now enjoy good servings of pure, traditional tapas and some culinary delicacies, it was centuries ago, the birthplace and shrine of one of the greatest writers that has had the Spanish language and universal, not to mention is the sole survivor of an architectural style born in Paris and that modernity was in charge of play by European countries. This is the Mercado de San Miguel, in the most traditional heart of Madrid, just a few meters from the Plaza Mayor.

The other day, eating a delicious plate of bucatini (spaghetti with holes that have their origin in Lazio), we asked ourselves what is the origin of pasta and spaghetti? have their origin in China? Do the Arabs brought it to western Asia, Greece or Italy?

In Gallecs (Vallès Oriental) native species were planted tomatoes, green beans, zucchini or cauliflower. His neighbors have recovered ancient varieties of wheat, some of which survive in very few places in Catalonia. And he cultivated a type of bean (called the gantxet) very popular and nutritious, but very productive, which is the essential complement to a good sausage. (más…)
