Canberra means, in native tongue, “meeting place”. This name accurately reflects the strategic position of the Australian capital, built between the two largest cities of the island, Sydney and Melbourne (300 miles southwest of Sydney and 650 km northeast of Melbourne). It is the first Australian city planned and built from scratch in all respects a modern model city, where modernity co-exist with art and culture.

The city is located in the southeast of the island. Its surroundings are characterized by numerous nature reserves such as the Tidbinbilla, Namadgi National Park and National Botanical Gardens, near Black Mountain in Canberra. The beauty of the natural landscape, together with a modern infrastructure, has enabled a strong development of tourism. Australian Capital receives each year to more than one million visitors attracted by places like Parliament House, National Gallery, the Tower of Telecommunications and Technology Museum, among others.

As for the architecture highlights the Australian War Memorial, which is reached through the ANZAC Parade, a wide street, where military parades are conducted. This place is a tribute to the brave Australian military forces who have fought and died in the wars of the last century.

The National Gallery of Australia, is another attraction, especially for art lovers and a large archive relating to Australian Aboriginal culture, here it keeps a vast collection of documents and historical materials of that culture. Among countries, emphasize their art works of Pollock and Rubens.


Old Parliament House is one of the most visited places, like the National Library of Australia, National Archives of Australia and the National Museum of Australia. The beautiful and modern National Library has 220 miles of shelves, enough to satisfy the most avid reader.

As always, Australia stands out for its passion for music and art, this is no exception Canberra, example is the Canberra Theater and Playhouse, which hosts music festivals, concerts and other productions related. There are other buildings associated with this human manifestation: the Llewellyn Hall (located within the ANU School of Music), the Street Theater, located on Childers Street, and presents samples of professional theater companies and amateur and Albert Hall, opened in 1928.
