La Barranca del Cobre, located deep in the Sierra Madre Occidental, is actually a series of 20 cannons deployed grandeur a four times higher than the Grand Canyon in Arizona, but is different in nature, but narrow, more deep and thick vegetation. Home to the Tarahumara Indians (Rarámuri), the Sierra Madre is rich in history and legends, haunted by the relentless shadows of fallen warriors, martyred Jesuits and Pancho Villa for the hosts.

La Barranca del Cobre certainly qualifies to be considered an ecological reserve and national park and world heritage site. This famous system of canyons is one of the natural wonders, cultural and historical Mexico.

Located amidst the mountains of the legendary Sierra Madre in the state of Chihuahua, this immense series of canyons and ridges covers an area of 60,000 square kilometers of rugged territory. The rivers originating in the high forests have carved a maze of 16,000 miles of spectacular canyons in the volcanic rock. And so, standing on the edge of the ravine surrounded by pines and oaks, can observe and 1500 meters below the bottom of the colossal canyons, cactus and many large tropical trees.

All trips to the Canyon are made at the historic Chihuahua al Pacífico Railroad. The train winds from the Pacific Ocean to the great heights this wonderful scenic splendor. Built over a period of 90 years, this world-famous railway is a masterpiece of engineering. Has been called «the most dramatic train ride in the western hemisphere.»

Most tours cover the most exciting part of the route, from Los Mochis, Sinaloa at sea level, to the highest portions of the track in Creel, Chihuahua. Here located very near the top, almost 2500 meters. The train reaches the city of Chihuahua.

«Canyon» or «Copper Canyon» is the name usually used by visitors and tourists to refer to the total system of canyons, which covers 60,000 square kilometers.

Getting There:
Barranca de Cobre is becoming more accessible due to the advance mileage of the road network and rail andalusia pride that, for many years, runs one of the more spectacular routes on the planet.

By train, the best way to arrive at the Sierra Tarahumara, where the Barranca de Cobre. The Chihuahua-Pacific railroad from the state capital, and concludes his «pilgrimage» in Los Mochis (Sinaloa). There are also buses to the town of Guachochi, 344 km from the state capital. The trip takes 6 hours, approximately, on a dirt roads. This town is 16 kilometers from the Barranca de Sinforosa, another famous hollow.

Air is not a very used road, although in the towns of Barranca de Cobre several airfields. One is in Guachochi. Chihuahua from the plane in flight for nearly an hour.
