Tibet was an independent country (with some exceptions such as the Mongol invasions in the seventeenth century and the British occupation in 1904) until 1949. Despite these attacks, Tibet has maintained its cultural identity, even now, and since 1950, when China decided to seize their independence and protect them under the umbrella of “Greater China”.

This invasion affected approximately one million Tibetans and the Dalai Lama himself, who went into exile in India. The exodus began, and more than 100,000 Tibetans fled their country. The North Palace at Nineveh, in present day Iraq, has art displayed in low relief with amazing profusion showing details of the favorite subject of the Assyrian kings at that time: the hunting of lions.

Ashurbanipal (668-631 BC), the most famous of the Assyrian kings, we are shown in different scenes of hunting lions wounding. Even we can see scenes in which a subject of Assurbanipal is wounded by one of the lions, when it appears the great sovereign to punish the cat. (más…)

The historic treasure of the Spanish cave paintings

Seventeen Spanish rock caves of the Cantabrian fringe last week received the deserved recognition of being declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO. This rich heritage is hidden is dark and sheltered caves in Cantabria, the Basque Country and Asturias. Protected from the erosive action of wind or rain, these witnesses millennia of human history are one of the most impressive and beautiful testimony.

Many of these caves can be visited and essential if you travel north of the Iberian Peninsula. Much less known to the Altamira Cave, at least so far, these caves retain some of its authenticity to receive visits only small groups and tightly controlled, so as not to affect the conservation of paintings.
